Student Parent Wellness Group

This is a one hour twice a month drop-in group open to all Penn students and postdocs with children. It is intended to be a space where you can can come whenever you feel you need more support. It is a place where student parents can connect, develop support networks and build community. 
 
 
Session Topics:
Wednesday September 26th - Self-care
Wednesday October 10th - Stresses related to being an international parent
Wednesday October 24th - Building community as a working parent
Wednesday November 7th - Balancing Academics and parenting 
Wednesday November 14th - Topic to be determined 
 
We invite expecting, new and "experienced" parents to come connect and support each other, a place dedicated to hearing your concerns and challenges you deal with as student parents. Open to students, postdocs, and their spouses, partners and children as well (please note that child must be supervised at all times.) 
 
The group will be co-facilitated with a Counseling and Psychological Services clinician Sonya Meora, MSN, CRNP and Kendra Hypolite, MSW, LSW Assistant Director of the Family Center who is a licensed social worker. Reach out to Kendra at parents@gsc.upenn.edu if you have any questions. 
 
Lunch is provided! Please register in advance so we know how much food to order. 
 
The first session of our Student Parent Wellness Group on September 26th is during Healthy Campus Week which is part of the Partnership for a Healthier America’s Healthier Campus Initiative and highlights wellness programming and initiatives across Penn’s campus. Partnership for a Healthier America’s Healthier Campus Initiative will celebrate its fourth annual Healthy Campus Week (HCW) during September 24-29. This week-long push is focused on promoting the great work PHA’s campus partners are doing to make healthier choices easier for our students, faculty and staff. Don't forget to hashtag #healthycampus on social media to participate! 

 

English Lessons

English Lessons are available for Penn students and post docs and their adult family members. 

Classes are free. Advanced registration is encouraged. All classes take place in the Family Resource Center. Fall semester classes begin Sept 10 and end Dec 13. Please register in advance so teachers can prepare materials. Kids are welcome, but must be watched by the caregiver attending class. 

Beginners classes: Mondays 10AM-12PM

Intermediate classes: Wednesdays 10AM-12PM 

Advanced classes: Mondays 1PM-3PM

Intermediate Lessons are appropriate for learners who have some experience speaking English but would like to work on speaking skills and vocabulary.

Advanced English Lessons

Advanced lessons are appropriate for students whose native language is not English. The lessons will build control of advanced grammatical structures, develops ability to communicate by using various forms of expressions in different environments and discover the American culture.

Advanced registration is required, space is limited.

The Challenges of Infant Sleep: Workshop with Dr. Melisa Moore

 Becoming a parent is one of the greatest joys you will experience, but often the accompanying sleep deprivation is one of the greatest struggles. Our workshop with Dr. Melisa Moore, a clinical psychologist and board certified sleep expert at CHOP, can help.  She will share with you the common causes of pediatric sleep issues and different solutions that we can use to shape the foundation of a healthy sleep routine for our little ones. This workshop is tailored for parents and caregivers of infants, toddlers and children under 5.

This event is co-hosted by the Family Center and the Division of Human Resources, open to all Penn families. Lunch will be provided. Please register in advance. 

Let's Talk about Breastfeeding

This interactive conversation, is led by Dr. Diane Spatz, Director of the Lactation Program at CHOP, Professor of Perinatal Nursing and the Helen M. Shearer Professor of Nutrition at the University of Pennsylvania School of Nursing.

This event is a great opportunity for expecting, new, and experienced parents on campus to get help with breastfeeding challenges, ensure a smooth transition back to work and academics while sharing helpful tips with one another.If you are currently breastfeeding, pumping and/or bottle-feeding, pregnant, formula-feeding or just curious about breastfeeding come join us for this conversation.

This event is co-sponsored by Family Resource Center and the Division of Human Resources and is open to Penn staff, faculty, student, post docs and their partners. Lunch will be provided.

Philadelphia Zoo Tickets are back! This popular ticket sale gives you entrance to the local Philadelphia Zoo! The Philadelphia Zoo is home to many animals, some rare and endangered. A trip to the zoo provides fun to the whole family! Visit the Philadelphia Zoo website for more information. 

 

Tickets will go on sale on Monday, September 10th at 9am. We will be selling tickets for the reduced price of $10 per ticket. Children under the age of 2 enter for free.  Tickets can be purchased in cash only and are available for Family Center Members and their immediate family members only. Tickets are first come, first serve and will be available until supplies run out.

Family Swim at Sheer Pool

The Family Center will be hosting Family Swim at the Sheer Pool in the Pottruck Gym once again! On Friday's from 10:00AM to 11:00PM families will be able to participate in open swim in two lanes of the indoor pool. Families will have access to lifejackets, swim toys, kickboards and a swim instructor to answer questions and provide some tips! The minimum age for children to swim with parents in the pool is 6 months old.


This activity is limited to Family Center members and their immediately family members only. Registration will close when the maximum number of families for each session have registered. Registration is first come, first serve. If the website is listing "waiting list only," we have reached our maximum. If a spot becomes available, we will contact you.

Growing Minds, Morris Arboretum

Morris Arboretum introduces Growing Minds, new programming specifically geared to younger visitors and their families. Growing Minds offers events like with Seeds to Sprouts, Stroller Stride, Story Time Nature Yoga. Family and Kids Programs at the Penn Museum

Penn Museum Family Programming

Families can create fun memories in the Penn Museum’s international galleries with a lineup of engaging programs geared toward visitors of all ages. Except where noted, programs are free with Museum admission donation ($15 general admission; $12 for seniors [65+]; $10 for full-time students [with ID] and children [6-17]; free for Penn Museum members, children under 6, active U.S. military and PennCard holders.

FUN FOR ALL AGES
