Responsibilities: All Fellows' duties include first floor and front desk management, including making coffee, keeping the area tidy, answering phones and questions from guests. Organization, event planning, and time management skills are preferred; willingness to learn; general knowledge of the University and support services; and customer service skills useful. Please visit our mission and vision statements for more information. Individual Fellow positions have additional responsibilities outlined below.
Cultural & Recreational Outings Fellow Responsibilities: Plans arts/culture events and recreational outings
which showcase the resources of Penn and Philadelphia. The Fellow also arranges discounted tickets for graduate students for performing arts and sporting events, and plans art exhibitions in the Graduate Student Center. The Cultural & Recreational Outings Fellow reports to the Director of the Graduate Student Center.
TA/PhD Fellow Responsibilities (3 positions available): Plan workshops designed for doctoral students around broad topics of dissertation completion, teaching skills (for TAs), the grant and fellowship application process, and preparing for the academic job market. Work closely with other TA/PhD Support Fellows. It is preferred that these positions are filled by PhD Students. TA/PhD Support Fellows report to the Assistant Director of the Graduate Student Center.
Personal Development Fellow Responsibilities: Plans workshops and events that develop life skills, for example, personal finance, etiquette, health and wellness, public speaking, crafts and hobbies, etc. The Personal Development Fellow reports to the Director of the Graduate Student Center.
Mentoring Fellow Responsibilities: Promotes the Graduate/Undergraduate Mentoring Program to both graduate and undergraduate students. Matches mentors and mentees. Surveys mentors and mentees and evaluates the program. Works with Career Services to offer panel discussions on graduate school options for undergrads. The Mentoring Fellow reports to the Director of the Graduate Student Center.
Web Development Fellow Responsibilities: Maintains the Graduate Student Center website and intranet. Preferred skills in html, php, access database management, some css. The Web Development Fellow reports to the Assistant Director of the Graduate Student Center.
Compensation:
Fellows receive $14/hour.
Position Length:
Fellows are expected to work a total of 8-12 hours per week on average.
Please be aware that the University prohibits students currently enrolled
in classes from working at the University more than 20 hours total per
week. Fellows are appointed for one academic year. A Fellow can be dismissed prior to the end of the appointment
for failing to live up to his/her responsibilities to the Graduate Student
Center.
Who Should Apply:
Any student who is currently and will be registered as a University of
Pennsylvania graduate or professional student during the 2008--09 academic year
is eligible to apply. Some evening and/or weekend hours are required. Please
note: The University prohibits students who are taking classes from
working a total of more than 20 hours per week at the University.

Selection Process:
On the basis of the completed application and supporting documents, a
select number of applicants will be invited to interview. Candidates will
interview with the Director and Assistant Director of the Graduate Student
Center.
