CWIC Graduate Fellow

We are writing to alert you to a funding opportunity for advanced SAS graduate students with teaching experience. Next year Penn's speaking program, Communication Within the Curriculum, will initiate a new program of Critical Speaking Courses. We seek graduate students interested in becoming CWiC Teaching Fellows to teach in this program. Critical Speaking Courses are discipline-specific (or interdisciplinary) classes that also focus on improving student speaking abilities. These are classes, then, that teach a particular subject matter at the same time that they teach oral communication skills. Applicants from all
disciplines are welcome.

To apply to teach a Critical Speaking Course, graduate students should submit a letter of interest, a vita, at least one faculty recommendation, and a course proposal. The course proposal should include a course description and a preliminary syllabus. We are particularly interested in applicants' ideas for speaking assignments and how they imagine integrating those assignments into the goal of teaching other course materials. There is no need to include a developed reading list for the course at this point. Courses need not focus on any particular subject area, but will be seminar-sized and should be open to students regardless of major. Additional materials that speak to the applicant's teaching are welcome. Applicants may consult with CWiC's associate director, Dr. Bruce Lenthall, in putting together their materials.

Applications are due by Feb. 24th and should be submitted to CWiC, 120 Logan Hall, 6304.

Only dissertation-level students will be considered. Funding levels for these courses have not yet been determined, but CWiC Teaching Fellows will participate in a series of teaching workshops, for which they will receive an additional stipend.
