Please join the entire Univeristy community on January 16 for "A Day On And Not A Day Off." Encourage your family, friends, co-workers and fellow students to sacrifice a portion of the day to participate in one of the several volunteer projects offered by the University. Stockings for Kids Toy Drive
From 11/20/05-12/20/05.

The Stockings for Kids Holiday Toy Drive is a region-wide event sponsored by the Salvation Army and other local businesses and organizations. Each year, the program provides holiday gifts to underprivileged families in the Greater Philadelphia Area. Do your part to help this holiday season by bringing in a new, unwrapped gift (or gifts) to the Graduate Student Center from 11/20/05-12/20/05. For more information, check out

New, unwrapped gifts will be accepted at the Graduate Student Center (3615 Locust Walk) from 11/20-12/20/05. Gifts can be dropped off at the main desk.

Volunteer at the MANNA Kitchen

Graduate Student Center, Manna Kitchen (23rd and Market)

As we approach Thankgsgiving, take time to give something back to the community by volunteering at MANNA. MANNA is a local organization that prepares and delivers meals to those living with HIV and AIDS. We will be heading to the MANNA kitchen to volunteer on Monday, Novemebr 14th from 5-8PM. We will be helping with all aspects of meal preparation so dress accordingly -no skirts or open-toed shoes. You must also cover your hair - bring a hat or be prepared to wear a hair net.

Itinerary

4:15PM - Meet at the Grad Student Center. We will then take the trolley or bus to the MANNA Kitchen (23rd and Market Sts)
5:00 PM - 8:00 PM - Start Coooking!
8:00PM - Head home knowing you have done a good deed.

Community Tree Planting

Join your fellow graduate students and other student volunteers in helping to keep West Philadelphia and University City green. The UC Green program and its collaborative partners are sponsoring a fall tree planting and they need your help! There is room for 20 volunteers - so hurry and sign up soon!

Itinerary

9:00 AM -Meet at the Graduate Student Center at 9 AM for breakfast (coffee, tea, bagels).
9:30 AM - Leave for the Tree Planting Site (a short walk from the Grad Student Center).
10:00 AM - 1:00 PM - Help make University City green - Plant trees!!
1:00 PM - Admire your work.

Computer Donation
July-August 2005

Help Bridge the Digital Divide in West Philadelphia by donating your old computer and computer accessories!

For the months of July and August, the Graduate Student Center will be accepting old computers and computer equipment. The equipment will be given to Penn's Digital Divide Program, which will refurbish and supply the computers to computer labs in West Philadelphia. Any equipment that cannot be refurbished will be properly discarded.

Please supply the equipment already boxed so that it is easily transportable.

Equipment needed:
*Please try to follow the specifications below. Certain items (i.e. monitors) that cannot be used by the Digital Divide Program are assessed a fee for disposal. The Grad Center reserves the right to reject any equipment that does not meet specifications.

PCs:
• Pentium II and greater processor
• 400 MHz processor speed and greater
•128 MB or greater of RAM
•6 GB or greater hard drive

Macs:
• G4 and above

Monitors:
• 15” and greater, decent video quality

Printers:
• Ink Jet
• LaserJet
• No Dot Matrix, please!

Networking equipment:
• Ethernet cable
• Routers, hubs and switches

Miscellaneous equipment:
• Power cords, keyboards, mice
• RAM, Hard Drives, CD ROMs
• Scanners, cameras, fax machines and so on

Items may be brought to the main desk at the Graduate Student Center (3615 Locust Walk) from now until August 31st.
