The Graduate/Undergraduate Mentoring Program, which pairs undergraduate students with Penn graduate and professional students, is designed to help undergraduates learn first-hand about preparing for, applying to, and succeeding in graduate school. This program is cosponsored by Penn’s Graduate Student Center, GAPSA, and the UA.

Mentors will volunteer their time to listen, coach, and help guide mentees. As mentees consider what life after graduation may hold for them, they will benefit by having the insight and support of a current Penn graduate/professional student. As much as possible, matches between mentors and mentees will be made with an eye for common academic interests and career goals. Students can be assigned multiple graduate student mentors in several fields and have the option of requesting new mentors from semester to semester to gain a variety of perspectives.

We currently have graduate mentors in the following fields, as well as many more:

• Anthropology
• Architecture
• Biology
• Business
• Cell and Molecular Biology
• Chemistry
• City and Regional Planning

Some questions undergraduates might ask their mentors include:

  • What was it about your field that drew you to study it?
  • What sorts of careers are possible with a degree in your field?
  • How did you learn about the program you’re in?
  • What made you decide to pursue graduate school at Penn?
  • What kinds of things should I be thinking about if I want to pursue a graduate or professional degree in your field?
  • How heavy is the work load?
  • How long does it typically take students to complete the degree?

If you are a current Penn graduate/professional or undergraduate student interested in becoming involved with the Graduate/Undergraduate Mentoring Program, please take a moment to complete our brief match-up form. Please click on the appropriate tab (graduate or undergraduate) located at the top of this page. The information that you provide will be forwarded to the Grad Center Mentoring Fellow, who will then use that information to create mentoring matches. Should you have questions about this program, please direct them to the Mentoring Fellow. Thank you for your interest in the mentoring program!

The Graduate/Undergraduate Mentoring Program is co-sponsored by:

“The Mentoring Program has been an amazing experience for me.  My mentor has eagerly met with me over the last year to discuss everything from class selection to career paths.  She has edited my cover letters, and she has helped me make contact with alumni of similar interests.  Best of all, she has helped me feel more comfortable about my confusion and more confident that I will figure it all out and find a fulfilling career.” ~Anastasya Levin (communications undergrad)

“As a graduate mentor, it is extremely satisfying to help someone through the graduate school decision-making process. Graduate school represents a major life transition and each individual must find the best path for herself. Mentoring Elizabeth has given me a chance to pass along many of the tips that helped me navigate through the sometimes overwhelming application process…In my opinion, the Mentoring Program enables communication between undergraduates and graduates that often does not occur at other schools. Because of this, I truly feel a part of the community of scholars that is Penn.” ~Imogen Wirth-Granlund (City and Regional Planning, Historic Preservation)
